There is no difference between the M5 Competition’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and the standard M5. The Comp’s torque band is 170 rpm longer than the standard model’s, resulting in 553 lb-ft of torque. At the same 6,000 rpm, the standard M5 makes 600 horsepower, while the Comp variant makes 617 horsepower. Despite its unattractive carbon-fiber shroud, the engine is high-tech and powerful.
