2024 BMW X5 Redesign, Plug-in Hybrid, Release Date – Even though there are many great options in the mid-size luxury SUV segment, the 2024 BMW X5 stands out thanks to its exceptional combination of sportiness and sophistication. The X5 has three different engine options, the base of which is a 335-horsepower turbocharged inline-six that runs smoothly. With its twin-turbo V-8 producing 523 horsepower and its eco-friendly plug-in hybrid configuration providing up to 30 miles of range on electric power alone, this vehicle is a real crowd-pleaser.
While competitors like the Genesis GV80 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE class may offer a more opulent interior, the BMW X5 nevertheless gives off strong premium vibes thanks to its attractive, well-tailored cabin. Additionally, the X5’s handling is more endearing than its competitors, albeit not as sporty as the new BMWs of the recent past, for which we long. While actual performance players like the Porsche Cayenne may be more appealing to enthusiasts, the swift and well-rounded X5 ranks at the top of the class due to its excellent overall quality.
The only modifications for 2024 are a new set of packaging options. A wireless smartphone charging station is now part of the X5’s optional Premium package, while gesture controls for the iDrive infotainment system are still not included. The Executive Package is the same way, and it doesn’t include gesture controls either. In addition, BMW’s SensaTec animal-free faux-leather upholstery is no longer available, but a new vegan faux-leather alternative dubbed Sensafin has taken its place.

The X5’s exterior is dominated by two massive kidney grilles in the center, with Icon adaptive full-LED adaptable headlights on either side. The M50i model is distinguished from the rest by its exclusive M Sport body package and Shadowline exterior trim. The exterior trim and features on the limited-edition Black Vermilion are blacked out to highlight the car’s matte black paint job, except the red vertical grille slats and the red brake calipers. Black 22-inch alloy wheels make it go. Arctic Grey Metallic was a $550 add-on when we picked up our X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid for a week.
The M Sport Package was also installed, including things like staggered 21-inch wheels and M Sport brakes, costing an additional $5,500. The X5 is a sizable SUV, measuring 194.3 inches in length and 78.9 inches in width. The height is estimated at 69 inches, while the wheelbase is 117.1 inches. The standard model weighs 4,828 pounds, and the xDrive40i weighs 4,863 pounds at the curb. At least 5,260 pounds are needed to move the V8-powered M50i, while 5,646 pounds are required to move the xDrive45e.
Alpine White and Jet Black are the only standard colors for the basic trim, but for $550 more, you may choose from eight metallic tones. To name a few: the test color, Arctic Grey Metallic; the standard colors of Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Dark Graphite, Mineral White, Blue, and Manhattan Green; and the brand new hue, Sparkling Brown. To get Carbon Black, you must pay an extra $5,250 for the M Sport package. However, typical metallic colors, including Carbon Black, are provided at no cost because the M50i model already arrives standard with the M Sport package. In place of Dark Graphite and Manhattan Green, you can spend $1,950 on either Tanzanite Blue II or the brand-new Dravit Grey (which replaces Ametrin from the previous year).
The X5’s first and second-row seats offer ample room for adults, while the third-row seat is reserved for children. When inside, passengers will find an interior outfitted with premium materials, abundant electronic charging ports, and, depending on the trim level selected, a plethora of opulent extras. The front seats are power-adjustable and include a memory setting for the driver. All trims feature a tilt-and-telescoping power steering wheel, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, automated climate control with separate settings for the driver and front passenger, a power rear liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, and an array of colors for the interior lighting.
The X5 can be outfitted with a slew of high-end luxury SUV features, such as massaging seats, remote start, soft-close doors, soundproof glass, a leather dashboard, heated front armrests, and a steering wheel, but doing so would increase the sticker price significantly. Bowers & Wilkins offers a high-priced surround-sound audio system with diamond-domed tweeters. Ample storage capacity is available in the X5. 11 of our bags would fit behind the second row of seats even while all the front seats were occupied. We provided 26 cases when we folded down the SUV’s back seats (which may be done from the vehicle’s side or rear). The GLE’s score in this test was identical to that of the X5, case by case; however, the GLE’s rear seats are not as convenient to stow.
Two 12.3-inch screens modernize the cockpit’s minimal aesthetic. The other controls the infotainment system, which uses BMW’s newest iDrive software. The former acts as a digital gauge display, a feature that is becoming increasingly ubiquitous in luxury automobiles. The rotary knob in the center console and the touchscreen control the system. It comes preinstalled with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
There are three 2024 X5 variants, each of which comes with a unique set of engine options. The sDrive40i and xDrive40i trim levels of the X5 are powered by a 335-horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine. The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid has a turbocharged inline-six engine and an electric motor producing 389 horsepower. Using our test track as a proving ground, we timed an X5 with that powertrain going from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds. (We also put the 40i through its paces, and it accelerated to 60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds.)
The M50i’s twin-turbo V-8 generates 523 horsepower, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Each of the three engines can be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, providing plenty of muscle for any road condition or driver need. The X5’s steering is more connected and direct than the previous generation, although it’s still not what we’d call sporty. The ride quality is also much improved. This is where the Audi Q7 still triumphs over the X5, but only barely. When you throw the X5 into a sharp turn, it maintains its grip and rewards you with predictability that’s lacking in the GLE class. Additionally, regardless of which engine you choose, the X5 can pull up to 7200 pounds.
According to the EPA, the X5’s inline-six engine is as fuel-efficient as the four-cylinder version of the GLE class and slightly more frugal than the four-cylinder Q7. It has much lower EPA ratings due to the V-8. However, only the 40i model achieved its highway rating of 28 mpg in our real-world tests; the M50i earned 20 mpg, two mpg less than projected. The 45e plug-in hybrid performed 46 MPGe using electric power alone and 26 mpg using gasoline. Check the EPA’s site for specifics on the X5’s gas mileage.
2024 BMW X5 Release Date and Price
In 2024, BMW will sell five different X5 trim levels, the cheapest of which, the sDrive40i, will cost $59,400 before adding in the $995 destination fee. The MSRP in the US for the AWD xDrive40i model is $61,700, which is higher than the $58,400 base price. The price of the xDrive45e hybrid starts at $63,700 before tax incentives, and other discounts are applied. Options on our test vehicle totaled over $20,000 and included the Driver’s Assistance Pro package ($1,700), the primarily aesthetic M Sport Package ($5,500), and the Executive Package ($4,050). In addition, there was a $995 destination fee, for a total of $81,695.
The Black Vermilion special edition is based on the xDrive40i, but at $82,300 with all the extra equipment, it costs nearly as much as the fastest variation in the lineup, the X5 M50i, which has a base price of $82,800. Notably, a $7,500 federal tax credit is available for the xDrive 45e. We used the BMW X5 online configurator to its absolute maximum, resulting in a price of over $105,000 (including destination) for a fully loaded model. The 2024 BMW X5 is an all-new vehicle, and it will go on sale in June of 2023.
